Storyline - short version
'Facing The Unknown' highlights the urgent need for proactive emergency preparedness. Through the eyes of Luna, a student who grapples with the fragile state of our world. Inspired by the book Emergency Preparedness by Paul Rübig and Achim Kaspar, this documentary delves into key topics such as water resilience, sustainable energy and infrastructure as protective mechanisms against the unpredictable forces of our future.
By combining technical insights with Luna's artistic reflection, the film highlights strategies for risk prevention and resilience – and emphasises the power of foresight and collaboration in shaping a safer and more adaptable society.
Facing The Unknown – A film about water, change and resilience
Facing The Unknown encounters a world at a tipping point: increasing droughts, dwindling water resources, fragile infrastructures. The documentary weaves scientific perspectives with personal stories, visual poetry and the inner journey of a young student – Luna – who sets out to find answers to a pressing question: How do we prepare for a future in which water is no longer a commodity we can take for granted?
The film takes us from the scenes of European water networks to global strategies for resilience planning. It shows how technological innovations, political cooperation and social engagement must intertwine to enable real change.
With contributions from leading experts such as Damian Brdjanovic, Michael Dickstein, Naomi Timmer and Durk Krol, the film brings the reality behind the statistics to life: the silent crises in our soil, cities and pipes – and the people who are looking for solutions.
Luna's artistic vision serves as a bridge between facts and feelings, between system analysis and personal experience. Facing The Unknown is not a disaster scenario – it is a film about responsibility, hope and the power of preparation.
